Alresford Beat Gosport & Fareham for First Win of the Season

11th November 2025

Alresford 15 – Gosport & Fareham 5 [ 8th November 2025]

Alresford RFC sealed their first win of the season with a commanding 15–5 victory over Gosport & Fareham at Arlebury Park, showcasing power, discipline, and teamwork.

Alresford welcomed Gosport & Fareham to an unseasonably warm Arlebury Park for our fourth game of the season, keen to build on the performance from the previous month.

The home team kicked off the first half, and as both teams sought an opening, it was Alresford who quickly began making inroads into the Gosport defence. A string of penalties resulted in a penalty being awarded, which was duly slotted over. 3-0 to the home side.

The remainder of the first half turned into a forwards based, attritional affair, with defences on both sides proving difficult to break down. However it was the away side who scored the next points, just before halftime, with a well worked try. The conversion was missed, making the score at the break;

The away team kicked off the second half determined to build on that momentum, but an increasingly dominant Alresford team started to find holes in the away defence, and a build up of penalties from Gosport resulted in the awarding of a penalty try. The lead was now back with the home team at 10-5.

We then commenced a super display of discipline and forward momentum, whilst searching for further scores, and a second try was duly scored midway through the second half; although unconverted, this increased our lead to 15-5. And despite the efforts of both teams, this remained score at full time.

At last, a vindication of our teamwork and coaching ethos paid off with an incisive, disciplined, controlled performance that meant we fully justified our win. The pack were immense and drove back the Gosport pack on several occasions, the centres caused havoc with defence splitting runs and stifling defence, the wingers stretched the game and caused disruption with their play, and our full back was immense, making line break after line break.

We have shown with this performance that we are a team to be reckoned with, and with new players immediately making their mark, we can say that we have a squad that will cause the rest of the league to take note. The only criticism would be that a couple of tries and conversions were left out there, but this is a minor quibble against a performance of that quality.

Our thanks to Gosport & Fareham for the match, our best wishes for the rest of the season and we look forward to the return fixture in January.
