Alresford Rugby Show Courage in Defeat to Millbrook After Promising First-Half Performance

8th December 2025

Alresford 12 – Millbrook 2s 51 [ 29th November 2025]

Alresford welcomed Millbrook 2s to a surprisingly dry and sunny Arlebury Park for our last game of November, keen to build on the performances from the previous two games.

The home team kicked off the first half, and a bulky, physical Millbrook pack were quick to make their mark on the game. A period of relentless forward pressure resulted in the away side scoring the first try of the afternoon after 8 minutes. The resulting conversion made the score 0-7.

But buoyed by renewed confidence after winning our last two games, Alresford regained momentum and started to make inroads into a stout Millbrook defence. This pressure was rewarded with our first try of the afternoon after 21 minutes, with the conversion bringing the scores level at 7-7.

The away team were quick to respond to this and duly scored their second try after 27 minutes – the conversion making it 7-14.

Back came Alresford as our own forwards pressure resulted in our second try of the afternoon – although unconverted, the score was now 12-14.

However, the last score of the first half was a converted score from the away side, making the score at the break;

This looked liked it had been set up for an exciting and close second half in which we had a very good chance of winning, based on our first half performance.

However, for whatever reason, it just didn’t click for us, and over the next forty minutes, Millbrook’s physicality started to tell, and we fell away slightly with our intensity. As a result Millbrook scored a further 4 tries and two penalties without response, to make the final score;

An equally positive and frustrating afternoon from the sideline. We played so well in that first half keeping ourselves in the game, and yet, for whatever reason, it just didn’t work out in the second half. We continued to tackle manfully and probably should have had a further try, but in all honesty, other than that one missed opportunity, we didn’t threaten the Millbrook tryline in the second half.

Despite this, there are positives we can take from this, and take with us into our next game, and hopefully work on what didn’t work in next weeks training.

Our thanks to Millbrook for the game,  we wish them well for the rest of the season ,and look forward to the return fixture in February.
