Lymington 35 – Alresford 20 [22nd March 2025]
Alresford travelled to Lymington on a warm, blustery spring afternoon for our penultimate game of the season.
The away team kicked off, with both teams keen to assert early dominance.
But Alresford were the first to break the deadlock when a platform of attacking movies was rewarded with the awarding of a penalty. The resulting score made it 0-3 to Alresford.
However, it wasn’t long before Lymington showed why they are ahead of us in the table with their first try of the afternoon after 22 minutes. The conversion making the score 7-3 to the home side.
But back came Alresford with their first try; although the conversion was missed, the away team had edged in front at 7-8.
Lymington continued to attack the Alresford line, and a somewhat contentious decision from the referee resulted in the home team being awarded a penalty try – 14-8.
This remained the score at halftime.
The home team kicked off the second half keen to increase their lead, and were rewarded for their endeavours with a third try; duly converted, the lead was now 21-8.
And a fourth, bonus point, try followed soon after, as the lead increased to 28-8.
But this Alresford are increasingly viewing adversity as a challenge, and after a period of intense pressure, their second try was scored. The conversion reduced the deficit to 28-15.
And to the delight of the away support, a third try came soon after. Although the conversion was missed, the score was now 28-20.
But it was the home team that produced the final score of the afternoon, as a steady litany of injuries to the Alresford team started to take their effect. A converted try just before time made the final score;
Lymington 35 – Alresford 20
Whilst running the risk of sounding like a broken record, this was another frustrating afternoon on the sidelines. We are continuing to show that we are more than capable of competing at the top of the table teams, but our results do not reflect this. It is fair to say that our injury count today affected our momentum at inopportune moments, but we continued to fight, to defend and to cause repeated problems for the home team.
We know how good we can be, and we know that this will be reflected in our future performances, and hopefully the scoreboard, next season.
Our thanks to Lymington for the match, and we wish them well for the remainder of the season. Our next game is back at the Arlebury on 5th April, when we welcome Southsea Nomads for our final game of the season. Our thanks to those who made the trip today and made their voices heard, and we look forward to seeing in two weeks time.
